We all remember times when we were young and "alone" meant frightening. Both Kurt Kobain and Eddie Vedder capture that solitude, so intense in some children's lives that it can be inescapable. When inescapable, it leads to psychological problems.
Both "Sliver" and "Daughter" end hopeful, with Nirvana's "I woke up in my mother's arms" and Pearl Jam's "She will rise above. Anyone can be a force for good in a child's life, a power to fend off loneliness, to be a friend. I like that Nirvana ends in the power of mother and child, and Pearl Jam ends in the power of one, the individual.
Be a force for good in the lives all children you encounter, and the world will be better for it.
